Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) 5 October 2004 Information release
Political Prisoners' Health in Burmese Prisons
We, the AAPP, have been monitoring the political prisoners in Burma and have been issuing media and information releases, statements and reports. We issued a statement and announced on March 5, 2004 that there were 50 political prisoners in bad health in Burma’s prisons. However during the last 6 months, we have seen figures increasing dramatically. In fact, the numbers of prisoners in ill health are doubling.
Recently, the Special Rapporteur to UNCHR, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, presented a human rights situation report to the General Assembly and repeatedly requested the junta to release immediately and unconditionally those political prisoners who are in bad health.
We, the AAPP want the Special Rapporteur to UNCHR, the world leaders, and others who support our Burmese struggle to know more details. Therefore we are issuing a list of political prisoners in ill health in Burmese prisons.
For the time being, there are 1,425 political prisoners in Burma.
